Couples Counseling That Helps You Move Forward Together
Practical, personalized online couples counseling for partners throughout New Hampshire and Maine.
You don’t have to wait until the relationship is falling apart to make a change.
Relationships can become strained gradually. Communication gets harder. The same arguments keep resurfacing. Resentment builds. One person may feel unheard while the other feels like nothing they do is enough. Sometimes you still care deeply about each other but no longer know how to get back to feeling like a team.
Couples counseling can help you slow those patterns down, understand what is happening between you, and begin building different ways of communicating, connecting, and responding to each other.
You may still care about each other. You may just be tired of having the same relationship problems over and over.
Couples often come to therapy after trying repeatedly to fix things on their own. Maybe you:
- Keep having the same argument even when the topic changes
- Feel misunderstood, criticized, dismissed, or taken for granted
- Avoid difficult conversations because they rarely seem to go well
- Feel more like roommates, coworkers, or co-parents than partners
- Have trouble rebuilding trust after hurt, dishonesty, or betrayal
- Disagree about intimacy, parenting, money, family, priorities, or the future
- Feel like one person is pursuing connection while the other keeps pulling away
- Love each other but are beginning to wonder whether love alone is enough
You don’t have to know whose “fault” the problem is before coming in. Couples therapy is less about deciding who is right and more about understanding the patterns that keep pulling both of you into the same place—and figuring out what needs to happen differently.
What Can Couples Counseling Help With?
Relationship problems rarely stay in one category. Communication problems can create distance. Distance can affect intimacy. Stress can turn into irritability. Old hurts can shape new arguments. Couples counseling gives you room to understand the pattern between you—not just who said what in the latest disagreement.
Communication & Recurring Conflict
When conversations quickly turn into arguments, defensiveness, shutting down, or misunderstanding, couples counseling can help you slow the pattern down and develop more effective ways of talking and listening.
Emotional Distance & Disconnection
Sometimes there is no dramatic crisis—you simply stop feeling as close. You may spend plenty of time together but feel lonely, disconnected, or uncertain about how to find your way back to each other.
Trust, Hurt & Betrayal
Trust can be damaged by dishonesty, secrecy, broken agreements, infidelity, or accumulated hurts that were never fully repaired. Therapy can help you understand what happened, what each of you needs now, and whether trust can be rebuilt.
Intimacy & Affection
Differences in affection, sex, desire, emotional closeness, or expectations around intimacy can create hurt and rejection on both sides. Counseling can create a more constructive place to talk about needs that may be difficult to discuss on your own.
Parenting & Family Stress
Parenting, blended families, extended family, caregiving, and competing responsibilities can put enormous pressure on a relationship. We can work on functioning more effectively as a team even when you do not always agree.
Money, Roles & Responsibilities
Conflict about finances, household responsibilities, work, decision-making, or who carries the mental load is often about more than the task itself. Therapy can help uncover what these disagreements mean to each of you and build clearer expectations.
Life Changes & Transitions
Marriage, becoming parents, relocation, career changes, children leaving home, retirement, health changes, and other transitions can reshape a relationship. Even positive changes can require couples to renegotiate how they function together.
Deciding What Comes Next
Sometimes the question is not simply how to communicate better. One or both partners may be uncertain about the future of the relationship. Therapy can provide a structured place to understand what has happened, what each person wants, and what options make sense moving forward.
You don’t have to decide which issue is the “real problem” before scheduling. Relationship difficulties usually overlap, and part of the work is understanding how the pieces connect and which patterns are most important to change.
Couples Therapy Should Be More Than a Place to Rehash the Same Argument
Being heard matters, but simply taking turns telling a therapist what the other person did wrong usually does not create much change. Couples counseling should help you understand what keeps happening between you and give both of you opportunities to respond differently.
At Action With Purpose, couples therapy is collaborative and practical. The goal is not to decide who is the good partner and who is the bad partner. We work to understand the relationship pattern, make room for each person’s experience, build useful communication and relationship skills, and turn insight into changes that can continue outside the therapy session.
Understand the Pattern Between You
We look beyond the latest disagreement to identify the recurring cycle underneath it—what tends to trigger each of you, how each person responds, and how those responses can unintentionally keep the problem going.
Make Room for Both Perspectives
Two people can experience the same relationship very differently. Couples therapy creates space to better understand what each person is feeling, needing, assuming, and trying to communicate without requiring one perspective to cancel out the other.
Build Skills You Can Actually Use
Depending on what you are facing, our work may include communication, listening, conflict management, emotion regulation, boundaries, problem-solving, rebuilding trust, expressing needs more clearly, and responding differently when emotions run high.
Put Practice a Different Way of Relating Into Practice
Understanding the pattern is only the beginning. Therapy becomes a place to practice new responses, notice what changes the interaction, adjust what does not work, and gradually create healthier patterns between sessions.
The goal isn’t to eliminate every disagreement. It’s to help you handle differences in ways that create more understanding, trust, connection, and choice about the relationship you are building together.
Getting Started Is Simple
You do not need to agree on exactly what the problem is before your first appointment. The initial session gives us a chance to understand the relationship from both perspectives, what has been happening between you, what each of you hopes will be different, and whether working together feels like a good fit.
1. Choose a Time
View current availability online and request an appointment that works for you. You don’t need to call first.
2. Complete Your Forms
After scheduling, you’ll receive access to the secure client portal. Completing your intake forms at least 24 hours before the appointment gives your clinician time to review them and prepare for the session,
3. Meet Online
Join your secure telehealth session from a private location in New Hampshire or Maine. We’ll begin by understanding what is happening in the relationship and what each of you would like counseling to help change.
You are not committing to months or years of couples therapy by scheduling a first appointment. The first step is simply having the conversation and deciding together what makes sense from there.
Using Insurance or Paying Privately
Cost matters when you’re deciding whether therapy is realistic and sustainable. Action With Purpose works with a number of insurance plans in New Hampshire and Maine, and self-pay is also available for clients who prefer to pay privately or whose insurance is not currently accepted.
